Visiting a police station in India

What to Do When You Reach the Station

Knowing the process before you walk in makes the visit faster and protects your rights.

  1. 1

    Ask for the duty officer

Every station has an officer on duty 24×7 at the front desk. Start there.

  2. 2

    State your matter clearly

Explain what happened, where and when. Bring any evidence, photos or documents.

  3. 3

    Know FIR vs NC

Cognizable offences require an FIR the police cannot refuse. Minor matters are recorded as an NC.

  4. 4

    Collect your free copy

You are legally entitled to a free copy of the FIR. Always insist on it before leaving.

  5. 5

    Note the reference number

Record the FIR or NC number — you will need it for follow-ups, insurance and court.

Women & Child Safety

Every police station in India is required to maintain a Women Helpdesk. Complaints of harassment, domestic violence, stalking or assault must be registered immediately and cannot be delayed for jurisdiction reasons.

Zero FIR: A woman can register an FIR at any police station, even if the incident took place elsewhere. The station must accept it and transfer it to the correct jurisdiction.

Tips for Getting the Best Results

Enable precise GPS

On mobile, turn on high-accuracy location for the closest match.

Call before visiting

Confirm the station handles your matter before travelling.

Widen the radius

In rural areas, increase the radius to 50 km to see more stations.

Check jurisdiction

FIRs are normally filed where the incident happened, not where you are.

Police Station Near Me – FAQs

How do I find the nearest police station to me right now?
Click the 'Allow Location & Find Stations' button on this page and approve the browser's location prompt. Your device's GPS is used to calculate the straight-line distance to every indexed police station, and the closest ones are shown on a live map with phone numbers and one-tap directions.
Does this website store my location?
No. Your GPS coordinates are used entirely inside your browser to sort stations by distance. They are never transmitted to a server, never logged, and never shared. Closing or refreshing the page discards them permanently.
What should I do if the location search does not work?
If you denied the permission prompt, enable location for this site from the padlock icon in your browser's address bar and try again. If GPS is unavailable, use the search box to look up your city, locality or 6-digit PIN code instead.
Is the nearest police station always the correct one for my complaint?
Not always. FIRs are normally registered at the station whose jurisdiction covers the location of the incident. However, under the Zero FIR provision you may register an FIR at any police station regardless of jurisdiction, and it will be transferred to the correct station.
How accurate are the distances shown?
Distances are straight-line (as-the-crow-flies) measurements from your GPS position to the station's recorded coordinates. Actual road travel distance will be longer. Use the Directions button for real driving or walking routes.
Can I call a police station directly from this page?
Yes. Every result card shows the station's listed phone number as a tap-to-call button on mobile. For any emergency, dial 100 or 112 instead of calling a station landline.

Know Your Nearest Station Before You Need It

The best time to find your local police station is before an emergency. Save the number, note the address, and share it with your family.
